How do we measure the water temperature?

Why measure the temperature of a nutritive solution in hydroponics?

It is important to control the temperature of your nutrient solution to avoid large oscillations or variations in temperature in order to protect your plants in your crops.

Temperature affects plantgrowth, flowering, seed production and flower pollination.

If the temperature is too cold, seeds will not germinate, cuttings will not develop roots, flowers will not produce pollen. Your plants will grow slowly or stop growing completely. If the temperature is too warm, your seeds will not germinate and cuttings will not root in the same way as the cold. Plants can die from oxygen deficiency or succumb to pathogens that like higher temperatures and thrive in these climatic conditions.

Most plants prefer a root zone temperature between 18 - 22 ° C (65 - 72 ° F)

Cooler for winter crops, warmer for tropical crops.

Keep your solution at about 20°C (68° F) to get the best oxygen content and absorption by your plants' roots. High water temperatures (above 22ºC or 72ºF) quickly reduce dissolved oxygen and increase the risk of root disease.

Cold water temperatures can shock roots and cause other problems so be careful when watering.

Should I add water to my tank?

Yes, do so at the same temperature as the water in the root zone before starting the pumps. Rapid changes in nutrient solution temperature can stress your plants

Tips for controlling the temperature of the nutrient solution in your hydroponic systems and hydroponic pots

In winter , put heat mats under your tank and/or use aquarium heaters for your nutrient solution. Find out more about greenhouse and grow tank heaters

In the summer, use coolers, air conditioners or water coolers like for aquariums.

Protect your nutrient solution from direct sunlight or sunlight emitted by your grow lights: Insulate or sink your tank in the ground.

If you can't keep the temperatures from rising too high: lower the strength of the nutrient solution supplied to your plants.

Why does my solution tank evaporate?

A hot, dry environment evaporates water quickly: Evaporation can cause big problems by increasing the concentration/conductivity of the nutrient solution.

What if you can't get the temperature of your growing environment down quickly?

Try covering your tank with black and white plastic (white side up, black side down). This will reflect light away and help prevent evaporation.

Reducing direct light on the solution will also slow or prevent the growth of algae and bacteria: If you are increasingly indoors, consider the warmth of horticultural lights.

A slight change in the position of a light can make a big difference to growth. Outdoors, or in a greenhouse, the amount of sunlight will affect the temperature of your growing environment.

Monitor the temperature of your solution carefully

Know that some PH testers and EC testers or conductivity also measure the temperature of your tanks or hydroponic tank.

For small hydroponic systems or beginner growers, the measuring pens Bluelab allow you to measure the temperature of the nutrient solution or choose one of our portable precision testers that will give you precise measurements in the palm of your hand.
